The awareness of the landscape as an image is explicitly thematized in picturesque aesthetics from the late 18th century onwards. This manifests itself, among other things, in the English landscape garden and in emerging landscape tourism. What presents itself here is an intermediate position, which is characteristic of the modern landscape. On the one hand, the tourist, the landscape architect, or the artist attempts to capture the surroundings in one or more images. But this need for images arises from the realization that one can never fully survey or make transparent that environment—whether in a planned or other manner. A landscape then flows from an interplay of distancing oneself and becoming part of an environment, analysis and synthesis, acting and letting things happen. It is that interaction.
